For those who may not know...
We've been dating for over 10 years (it will be almost 11 by the time the wedding arrives), and have been friends since 2013! What started as teammates on the Lucile Erwin Middle School swim team and playing Christmas songs together in Old Town Fort Collins circa 8th grade turned into sitting together on marching band bus rides to becoming senior prom king and queen to adopting two cats and moving across the country to Washington, DC.

Planning a surprise proposal for somebody who has had mystery-solving in their bones since they were a child (I'm looking at you, Sherlock Holmes books and TV series) was bound to be an exercise in futility, and futile it was. In an effort to make the proposal as perfect as possible, I collaborated with Maizy's best friend (and maid of honor!) Jia, often times texting about my plans. Well, one accidental slip of my finger pulled up Jia and I's message history one innocent morning in October 2024, and even though Maizy played it cool and didn't say anything, I was praying she had not seen the messages.
On New Year's Eve 2024, I got down on one knee at the Denver Botanic Gardens light displays and proposed. It was a beautiful moment, and shortly thereafter both Jia and I asked, "Did you suspect anything?", to which Maizy replied "Yep, I saw those texts 3 months ago...". Cue Jia and I groaning and lamenting my foolishness, while Maizy repeatedly assured me that she loved knowing it was coming even more than it being a surprise. I'll never know if she was lying about that, but I know that next time I plan a surprise for her, discussions about it between Jia and I need to not be at the top of my text messages and in all capital letters.
